Biography

After graduating from Sydney University in 1977 with degrees in Arts and Law and then completing a year as an articled clerk, Amanda was admitted as a solicitor in 1978. In her early years in practice she gained broad experience in a wide range of areas of law, including conveyancing, probate, personal injury litigation, commercial law and environmental law, at one time appearing regularly in the Land and Environment Court for a major local council.
It was in 1980 that Amanda first began to appear in the Family Court. This challenging area of legal practice became her main interest and over the years she developed a reputation in the profession for her ability and her common sense approach. Recognising the emotional burden that comes with protracted court proceedings, Amanda focuses on assisting her clients to achieve an early and reasonable settlement of their disputes. In those cases that require a court decision, her considerable experience ensures that her clients are well served and achieve a favourable outcome.

Amanda was among the first NSW practitioners to be recognised for their expertise in family law when she became an accredited specialist in family law in 1993. She has subsequently been elected by her peers to her current position as the NSW Solicitor representative on the Executive of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, the peak body representing family lawyers across the nation.

Other positions she currently holds include:

• The Family Law Section’s observer on the Family Law Council, a statutory body established under the Family Law Act to advise the government on family law issues;

• A member of the NSW Law Society’s Family Issues Committee;

• The Law Society of NSW representative on the Child Support Agency’s State Manager’s Advisory Panel;

• A member of the Legal Aid Review Committee;

• A member of the panel of Independent Children’s Lawyers.

Amanda has also been a speaker on family law topics at various seminars and conferences for members of the legal profession.

For clients finding their way through the legal and emotional obstacles that often accompany the breakdown of a marriage or de facto relationship, Amanda offers considerable knowledge and experience together with an understanding of the difficulties experienced during this process.
